A recent trip down the South Coast was spiced up with a visit to the fun and quirky Burlesque Cafe, nestled among a strip of antique shops on the Old Main Road in Ramsgate. It’s everything the name suggests, over the top, the decor lit up with fairy lights, pinks, mirrors, hats, legs…you name it and it’s probably nestling among the rollicking bric-a-brac of yesteryear. Even the loos have the 1950’s advertising posters guaranteed to raise a chuckle. The food is fresh, homemade and takes in interesting flavour combinations. The welcome is warm and down to earth, and the coffee is top notch, as would be expected of last year’s South Coast Winner of the Tribune’s cafe society competition. Soufflé omelettes with bacon, cranberry and camembert were a man-sized feast. The fish was fresh and the “chips” were potato bites roasted in pesto. Salads too are interesting and even the humble burger is home-made and tarted up with zingy relish. The plus is that the upstairs room is open some evenings for a swanky and decidedly burlesque supper club. oh and the mile-high bar one cake is gooey perfection…
